Proper Pronouns (2020) Screening & Discussion

3 PM

There are 30 transgender, ordained ministers in the United States; six are in North Carolina. Dawn Flynn, Mykal Shannon, Liam Hooper, and Debra Hopkins are battling narrow-mindedness within the religious community, their families, and NC natives. In order to live their authentic selves, some have thrown their loved ones into personal identity crises. They are bravely preaching from a pulpit despite the danger they face not only as a transgender person living in the South but also as transgender ministers navigating their way through local, state, and national governing bodies who decide what it means to be a human being.

Runtime: 1h 5m

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Meg Daniels and ministers featured in the film.

About the filmmakers:

Former newspaper photographer Meg Daniels, co-director of Proper Pronouns, has been telling people's stories from around the globe for over 20 years. As a native of Upstate New York, she discovered photography at a young age. Over the course of her career, she became a photo essayist and filmmaker, knowing that it was her responsibility to use her storytelling skills as a platform for raising awareness about social justice issues both well-known and shrouded by secrecy. She won Best Director and Best Co-editor for Proper Pronouns in the Third Quarter Technical & Performance Awards in the 2020 Queen Palm International Film Festival. Meg graduated with her MFA in documentary filmmaking from WFU on May 18, 2019.

He has developed seven digital shorts for The Greenville News website, GreenvilleOnline.Com, including a documentary series that accompanied coverage of the Clemson University football team’s pursuit of a national championship in 2016. Three of those shorts garnered South Carolina Press Association awards for online video production in 2009, 2011 and 2016. While a first-year student at Wake Forest University, he co-directed and produced Chip Off the Old Rock. It won film festival awards and was featured on Reel South. He graduated with his MFA in documentary filmmaking from WFU on May 18, 2019.
