Lunas Cautivas: Historias de poetas presas (2012)

12:30 PM

Part of the 2023 Latin American Film Festival, “Systemic violence and counter-media: Documentary, radio, poetry”

In a penitentiary unit, over 200 women live imprisoned; many are mothers with their babies, foreigners, and lonely women. The documentary tells the story of three main characters, three female inmates, and three poets. Lidia is the mother of Abril, who was born in prison. During the documentary, she obtains her freedom. Majo is a Spaniard, a mother of 5 children with whom she cannot have any contact during her sentence. When she serves half her time, she will be expelled to her country of origin. Liliana is alone. Her father is her only relative and is also in jail. He has a long sentence to serve. The documentary explores the liberating capacity of the poetic word: the power of art from a reclusive space. The poetry transforms their realities, questions their past, and reinvents a future world. Life stories blend into a daily routine of contrasts between experience in prison and poetic creation until they reach the final phase of freedom.
